Our involvement in Musculoskeletal Priority Setting Partnership (PSP) and Future Research

A PSP survey about various aspects of prehabilitation was completed earlier in the year. The responses were combined into a list and patients, carers and healthcare professionals were asked to rank the questions, to decide which topics needed further study and evaluation to help guide research into prehabilitation for hip and knee surgery.

In a full day workshop held on 21 July 2025 the priorities for research were identified by thorough, thoughtful and interactive discussions. The different groups participated in robust and meaningful dialogue. I participated as an observer as director of the Arthroplasty for Arthritis Charity.

On the 18th and 19th August 2025, I attended a meeting entitled From Patients to Partners:James Lind Alliance Prehabilitation for Hip and Knee Replacement Surgery PSP at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen.

The meeting in Aberdeen was for post-PSP dissemination and writing of the potential publications based the responses. The meeting was chaired by Dr Joanna Shim (lead researcher) and Jonathan Gower (James Lind Alliance advisor). The other steering group members who attended were Prof Sandy Jack, Rokhsaneh Tehrany, Lola Norman, Luke Farrow, Roy Swann and Emma Stage.

The research findings over the past 12 months will be used to provide feedback to the stakeholders and to disseminate findings though conference presentations as well as scientific publications, and will address the priorities to improve patient care for patients undergoing total hip and knee replacement surgery.

I thoroughly enjoyed the intense steering group meeting conducted by the dynamic and tireless Jo Shim. A multitude of key points and data were debated in the shaping and evolution of future presentations and research publications. I especially appreciated meeting my colleagues in person after our participation on numerous video calls. The enjoyable personal interaction at the table with a group of diligent researchers with fabulous personalities made the day!
